At least a captain has to be assigned for each ship in order to paticipate in a naval battle. However, it is recommended to fill it with rune cannoneers and fighters for obvious reasons. Captains are in command of the ship, bring underlings with them (who equates to the ships health) and boost the abilities of the ship.

These characters can either control a rune cannon aboard a ship or participate in boarding action. The elements are available for cannons if the character has the adequate rune attached (e.g. a water or flowing rune for the water elemental). Those who are assigned for boarding parties, bring their HP, ATK and DEF stats into action. Runes or items are forbidden. Either way, their underlings are added to the crew.
