The random monster battles are part of the RPG genre and shouldn't be changed, especially since some monsters are recruitable characters, so monsters should exist in a random battle capacity as well.
Also, Suikoden games vary to how gory they are, I don't think there will ever be a more barbaric character than Luca Blight, but if they can make somebody as merciless as that, then it would be very violent, we all remember the scene in Ryube.
Woman - "Please spare my life!"
Luca - "Drop down and act like a pig!"
Woman - "Oink... Oink... Like this?"
Luca - "Hoo, hoo hoo...... HOO HA HAHA HA HEE HEE!!!!!"
Woman - "So that means...."
Luca - "Die pig!"
*Slashes up the Woman.
Kiba - "Lord, shouldn't we go back now?"
Luca - "Hmph. My sword thirsts for blood. You, light everything to blazes! Fire! HAHAHA HEE HEE!"

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

ok its just from suikoden 3 onwards it just seems like suikoden has been watered down alot and is alot more childish then it was before, and im not saying it has to have loads of blood and guts. just a little more grown up. its probably just after an ace storyline like suikoden 2's am just getting dissapointed with the newer games. and i dont meen there not good games they just could have been alot better.

I never said to get rid of random battles or monsters (but not because they're "part of the RPG genre." That's the kind of thniking that holds games back) and I know there were holly leaves in SII (where did I say there weren't? <_<;; ), but since 3 it seems like they've been upping the cliche Japanese RPG crap and watering down the politics and war aspects of the series.
My point about the monsters is just that aside from the storylines becoming more mature again I'd like to see more random battles against soldiers, bandits, mercenaries, assassins, etc., and less DoReMi Elves and big snails. Keep the monsters, just don't make them so damn goofy and/or generic. How many giant spiders do we need to fight in our lifetimes?

Maybe you don't fight them because you didn't get a rune............How many giant spiders do we need to fight in our lifetimes?
Come on, suikoden is a world of fantasy, monster came and will come to the entire series because it's the folklore of this world
If you like military plot without monsters, how about command and conquer ? :p

I'm sick of fighting the same damn monsters in every RPG I play. Aside from that, I don't see how boxing armadillos and giant snails (snails?! Aside from the obvious speed factor, couldn't we just carry around a packet of salt?) are a part of Suikoden lore. A random monster with no established place in the series other than being a mcguffin that gives you experience is not a part of "lore," it's -- well -- it's that thing I just said. It was fine back on with S1 and S2 but game mechanics like these are archaic and unneccessary today....just don't make them so damn goofy and/or generic.
I just cringe everytime I'm on my way to help out with the war effort and I have to stop to fight a friggin' armadillo in boxing gloves. Dragons, giant lizards, jungle cats - fine, these things are just beasts that are there like anything in our world. Holly leaves I was just using as an example, I know they're a sort of mascot for the series and are very well established, my point was that can we not get something a little bit different? A little bit more appropriate?
I want to fight more random battles against humans/humanoids because it just makes sense. Is this a war or not? Aside from the major war battles, where is the opposition? Where are the enemies who are also running around trying to help their war effort? Where are the bandits and mercenaries seeking to profit off the state of whatever country you're in?
You go into a dungeon and fight skeletons and moving armor - fine - but shouldn't the world above be the world where the sentient things are in charge? It's a wonder anybody gets anything done in the Suikoden world with boxing armadillo's attacking them every five steps.
EDIT: Eh... I'm too lazy to edit but I want to apologize if this comes off as maybe a little confrontational. Exams, term papers, etc. <_< ^_^

Emperor, if you don't have aything to add to the discussion then kindly don't post in it thank you. This thread is about the level of violence in the series, not which is better than which.Emperor wrote:I can really say that Suikoden5 is a better than the last one. Suikoden4 was really low, story was a weeee little nice and rather predictable.

Suikoden 2 was violent, yeah everybody thought Tony was nice for growing all those vegetables for the allied army, but he could be just as ruthless as Luca Blight, I'm sure that the WWF aren't fans of Suikoden 2 for the very reason of Tony's whack-a-mole minigame.

Yeah me too. I also agree with Darian. Having more random battles against humans(soldiers, bandits, mercernaries, etc) will surely make a difference. After all, it's a war between humans, not monsters.

Before anyone tries to ride on me, let me just say that I play Suikoden for its story and gameplay, not merely for violence. However, I do share Tsubaki's sentiments. I would like to see more brutality on the enemy's part. Not the generic RPG villain crap, but similar to Luca Blight. Suikoden V spoiler. When I first played Suikoden II, I was thoroughly impressed with the Highland army (I really don't enjoy comparing everything to Luca, considering the fact his backstory wasn't explained in the game, which in my opinion, would have made him a stronger character). I felt as if Highland was a force that needed to be stopped. Of course, I was much younger at the time and my age could have been a factor, not to mention I was accustomed to playing RPGs like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, and Legend of Legaia.
"GAH!! (insert bad guy's name here) Wants to take over the world/destroy it! We better stop him!" versus Witnessing a guy torching someone's village to the ground, killing innocent women and children for sport, and sacrificing his own countrymen. What to choose?

Warrior Within sucked because of the emo Prince, porn star villain, and hardcore "rock" music, not because of the violence; the combat was the only thing that was improved.Alex Delferia wrote:Yeah, but the manga is, well, a manga. I've read mangas that were a little more violent than their anime counterpart.
To stay on topic, I dunno --- seeing a Suikoden being too edgy and violent might ruin the whole thing. Think "Sands of Time / Warrior Within" here, guys. See what I mean? I hope so.
Oh yeah and the dialogue.
But I see what you mean, which is why I think the real distinction is that the series needs to become more mature once again. Yes, that includes more violence, but I think having more violence heightens the sense that you're fighting a war. I honestly don't think Suikoden has adequately captured that since II (though V came very close).
