Rune Pieces

Is it possible to remove rune pieces after you have them put on by a blacksmith. I don't see an option to do so.

No, and there never has been the option. Don't worry though. They are a dime a dozen.

I have yet to find fire rune peices... what monsters drop them?

the enemies near treasure map islands, red hairballs and red-tailed scorpions sometimes drop it. also, the large crab boss that keeps coming back in Deserted Island can drop it

I wonder what happens if you have 20 of all elements set on your weapon. I guess no bonus...
