Badly named characters

Post by sticky-runes »

What characters do you think have got crappy names? They could even be characters you like who are being let down by their name.
It could be that some of these names mean something badass in another language, or are completely different in the Japanese version of the game, but if you don't like the sound of the name in your own copy of the game, just give your own reasons.

Bob
He's a werewolf. From a village that was destroyed by a wicked sorceress. and his name... is Bob. Even our shopkeepers have more exciting and exotic sounding names than him.

Sheena
I like him as a character - he's the first womanizer (or hormonal little sh!t in S1's case) of the series, he's inherited his father's skill with the sword and his mother's skill with magic and is a reluctant useful badass in S2. But why give him a girl's name? If S1 ever gets a remake I certainly won't complain if his name gets changed to Shane or Shawn or Sean.

Window
This guy creates windows for a living. What shall we call him? How about... Window? Yeah, that'll do.

Warlock
Not only does the character responsible for a lot of major tragedies occurring in S4 and Tactics just get glossed over, but they couldn't even be bothered to think up a creative name for him. The rune cannons originate from a demonic tree that was summoned from another world by a powerful warlock. What was the warlock's name? Umm.... Warlock.

Bob is a rastaman and a wererat, so I guess they chose Bob over Ratman in the end...
And Melodye is hardly better than Window.

I always thought of Warlock being some kind of pseudonym.

Gadget is also not the most inspiring name for a robot.

I was hoping there will be some rivalry between Window and Apple.

I think Bob is a reference to Bob Marley, isn't it?

Personally I never understood "Freed Y". Why not just Freed?

Also Amada is a bad choice for a masculine looking sailor. Amada is a feminine name as well.

Knock Knock
Who's there
Freed
Why Freed?
No, Freed Y

I always thought Pam was a stupid name. Is she a bad Pamela Anderson reference?

Also, to add to the nomen est omen party - Funghi, the fifth beatle.

I assumed Amada was meant to be like Armada, like the Spanish navy fleet (he fights with an oar and hails from the Island Nations)

Yeah, the Y on the end of Freed's name was annoying. They don't call Luca Blight Luca B or Theresa Wisemail Theresa W, so why do it to Freed?

Actually Funghi makes sense. Funghi means mushroom in Italian. He has a mushroom-like hairstyle, and since he's a cook Italian names suit him.

Perhaps it was a translation error, both in Amada's and Freed's cases.

Also Solon's always referred as Solon Jhee, except his execution scene, where he's referred just as Solon.

@Sasarai: Yeah, I know, but that's not any better than Window or Melodye or Chandler. That's a bad name.

Freed is always called Freed Y, even in Japanese. Amada is also really just Amada.

Pam/Pamela is a fairly common name. You might as well say that Ted is a Ted Danson reference or that Richard is a Richard Attenborough reference.

Why is it "Freed" anyway?!
Japanese: Yoshino, Freed and Sanae Yamamoto
Western: Susan, Hideyoshi and Jane Silverberg
You pick the fishy ones...

Who are those Silverberg? Don't remember them in any game.

... really? This was a joke by Wolkendrache. With a family name like Yamamoto and members of the family being named Yoshino and Sanae, Freed just does not fit. The same would be having a Silverberg with very western names (which they actually already have), and then just call one of them in a very exotic way.
