Re: Behind the name
Umm I think you are just putting more meaning into something than needs be.
I mean My real name is Jason which From the Greek name Ιασων (Iason), which was derived from Greek ιασθαι (iasthai) "to heal".
I don't think my parents thought that they wanted to give me a name that meant "to heal" They just liked the name. I would guess Konami did the same with most of the names in these games.

Re: Behind the name
I just thought it would be interesting to see what some of the names meant. I am not saying that Konami looked at every single meaning of the names but some of them do go with the character...and others dont.
For example
Humphery: Means "Peacefull Warrior"!
He is isn't he? I mean he is strong but he isn't violent or crazy and he's a nice guy.
This topic was made because I was bored and I thought some of them were interesting that's all.

Re: Behind the name
What I always found more interesting (and more amusing) about the names in Suikoden, especially in Suikoden I, were that alot of the surnames are pretty common surnames of Germanic-Jewish descent. I guess to the japanese they sounded exotic, but to a New Yorker growing up in alot of jewish communities seeing names like Silverberg, Oppenheimer, and Rosman in japanese games is amusing (there's also Rugner and Levenheit and probably more I'm not thinking of).

Re: Behind the name
Very true, when looking up the meanings of these names, a lot of the meanings were not just Japanese. Myself, not being Jewish or German find the names good as well. I have always liked Silverberg. What I always found more interesting (and more amusing) about the names in Suikoden, especially in Suikoden I, were that alot of the surnames are pretty common surnames of Germanic-Jewish descent. Re: Behind the name
Is it that strange? Suikoden is infamous for its blend of real-world culture in terms of setting and architecture designs, so reusing surnames from all our world is simply an extension of that.
Like how the Island Nations Federation demonstrates Egyptian influences, and names of Falenan royals being adopted from Zoroasterism.

Re: Behind the name
It's not the origin or descent that's strange to me, just the commonality and modernity of those names. Regardless of background, names in fantasy settings tend to be somewhat exotic and off-beat. You expect characters with rare or imagined names over more common, everyday names. I'd expect a name I'd never seen before in any way shape or form in most fantasy settings before something like John Smith, etc.
