What Suikoden in your mind had the best story?
I thought the Suikoden 2 story was pretty good.

well ill chime in with my two cents :
suikoden 1 seems more straightforward looking back now than when
it was released..... not as perplexing as number three.
suikoden 3.......... i still dont get the final luc battle or what he was trying
to expalin...plus the war battles here sucked
suikoden four seemed to kiddie compared to the past installments
suikoden v was awesome but towards the end just too damn depressing...
i guess ill have to go with suikoden 2...it really keeps going at a good
pace and is rewarding each time i play thru..... espeacilly if you save
gremio on the first one and nanami too , so it my pick !!!

Yeah I'd say it's definately a toss up between II and V. I think II had more 'heart' I suppose, I always get sucked into the story no matter how many times I play it. But I like the political side to V, I think overall its slightly more involved than the other installments (although I havn't played III).

Well, I'm just going to chime in with my ha'penny's worth and agree with what's been said. Suikoden II had the best story, though it's followed closely by Suikoden V. I guess what I like so much about II is that it kept the feel of the first game so well, but at the same time managed to flesh out the characters so much better.
