Suikoden 2 Remade with Features from Later Games
As the title says, if you could remake Suikoden 2, but with features from the later games, what game mechanics would you include?
For me:
- Skill System from S3. Affinities would be from E (lowest, cannot use rune) to S (highest).
- Sword of Magic from ST/S5. How about Luca Blight sporting a Rage Sword Rune or Culgan sporting a Thunder Sword Rune?
-- Although the Magic Sword Runes are supposed to be the children of the Black Sword Rune, they're pretty different from it because Black Sword in the original S2 game is a highly spell-based rune, unlike the Magic Sword Runes which are more buff-based and is more suited for fighters.
-- I wonder how Viktor would fare as a Magic Sword user, considering he holds the SDS in this game.
- Shield Runes, the weaker version of the Bright Shield Rune.
- A battle system with max of 6 controllable units per side and casting times (hidden or otherwise) for rune skills and spells.
Please feel free to comment, thanks!

why suikoden 2?? Surely if they were going to remake any game, it should be suikoden 1, so it could have improved graphics, additional rune slots and extra dialogue and sub-stories, etc.

I would not put Shield Runes in a S2 remake. It would take away some uniqueness of such a special rune in the game.
-More cut scenes
-Large scale battles with more strategy
-No money or leveling tricks.
It's such a good game already, but of course it would get a bit of a facelift to compete with other next gen games (though I do not like voice overs.)
I also like the idea of adding the S3 skill system.

Re: Suikoden 2 Remade with Features from Later Games
I'd be willing to keep all Suikoden 2 features as-is...
...as long as they fix that focking game script. (but keep all epic quotes, e.g. Viktor's "piss on you" speech, Miklotov standing up to Gorudo, half of what Shu says, etc)
Well, maybe make the war battle outcomes a little less aggravatingly random. But that's it.

I rate S3 the highest in term of gameplay due to its innovative skill system. S4 would have been much better with it so yeah why not for S1,2 as well.ninjaluc79 wrote: -- Although the Magic Sword Runes are supposed to be the children of the Black Sword Rune, they're pretty different from it because Black Sword in the original S2 game is a highly spell-based rune, unlike the Magic Sword Runes which are more buff-based and is more suited for fighters.
By the way, Magic sword runes dont relate to Black sword rune as they just represent lightning/fire WEAPON runes in S2.

Hmm... Good points, everyone.
I suppose S1 could be done these same ways as well. Same with S4, but with 6 controllable characters instead of 4. Imagine what could happen if S4 allowed 6 characters in your party. But then again, to be fair, S4 had no weapon ranges, so 1 row of 4 people does make sense in some way or another.
Anyways, the reason I included the regular Shield is that I was thinking "What are Sword Runes for without Shield Runes?" But then again, since Riou has the Bright Shield Rune on him, I guess regular Shield Runes would take away the uniqueness of Riou's rune. Because anyone who can equip it can use it, albeit with reduced power compared to the Bright Shield.

Re: Suikoden 2 Remade with Features from Later Games
Personally i'd like to see more improved graphics, with characters' cut scenes along with their voices too. I wonder how they would sound.
And of course BETTER war battles, and this time without retreating after X turns. I'd like to see something like S3 or S5's war battles.
And besides of the game mechanics,i'd like to have both Valeria and Kasumi recruitable, all the large beasts and all of them being non-stars,and make Rowd recruitable as the one star remaining left. (remember our conversation about this?)

Jeane in S2 had smaller breasts than in S5:

Actually women in S5 were much sexier than those in S2. Probably it has to do with the graphics. So the 3d graphics in a S2 remake could be a great addition,to get a better picture, with who were sexier.

Re: Suikoden 2 Remade with Features from Later Games
Well, improved graphics are a given for a remake, though I feel a little uneasy about this. Some if not all old-schoolers bash modern games for being "all about the eye-candy graphics and none about the gameplay and plot that actually matters". I don't exactly know which modern games have great graphics while still having great gameplay AND plot.
But anyways, I suppose I would like to read a mini-plot about how to recruit Rowd into the hero army, even if not as an SoD (since there are only 107 slots available, and I don't think removing crappy characters just because would cut it).
Since he's only in it (Luca's plans) get money for her sister's treatment, possibly from Liukan in Gregminster, I could see a possibility that Rowd would join the Allied Army if it was able to raise enough funds to treat his sister. Problem is, we don't see her again until way to the end of the game.
While reading a topic about a possibility that the devs actually planned to get Jowy back to the hero team, but it was later scrapped. If it pushed through, that could be awesome gameplay-wise since you have the best Rune Knight in the game (sorry Flik) with an offensive TR (some people really felt bad about Riou getting a supportive TR because RPG heroes are supposed to have the strongest offense in the game, so you don't see too many healer heroes, Cecil Harvey doesn't count) and one of best Unite Attacks in the game (Buddy Attack with Riou).
As for Valeria and Kasumi recruitable, maybe you can pick one the first time you go to Gregminster, then get the other one sometime after defeating either Luca Blight or Neclord. They could occupy one SoD each only if Tomo is removed, but I'm not sure about this move since she pretty much establishes Tsai's otherwise flat character.
EDIT: After reading "Pilika's Wooden Amulet belonged to Lazlo" theory, maybe it could be possible to have Lazlo and Tir in the same party at the same time?
DOUBLE EDIT: Jeane as a playable character? She's always shown as a Lightning Magic specialist in the games, so she could be midway between Luc and Mazus, higher MAG than Mazus but less durable and with more concentrated affinities than him.
Mazus has 04 HP (~550 HP at level 60) and A affinity to all offensive magic, B to all supportive magic in S2; Jeane could have 03 HP (~500 at level 60) and A affinity to Lightning, B to everything else.

No,not at all,Tomo would still be recruitable, but here is my hypothesis:
All large-beast characters would be recruitable, plus Chuchara, but they'll be non-stars. So we've got Tenman and Tentai free. Kasumi and Valeria would have their respective stars from S1,and the other 2 free SoD would be Tomo and Rowd.
You could recruit Kasumi and Valeria, both at the same time, why not? President Lepant would offer their services when Riou visits Gregminster.
PS: S5 is a game with improved graphics, and still has a great plot.
