Suikoden IV has one major tie to Suikoden I. in order to fully enjoy that section, i'd suggest you play Suikoden I. it's a short, fun game. might take about 30 hours to finish, and the experienced player can finish in 15!

Yeah, my last playthrough of Suikoden, lasted me about 20 and some odd hours. A lot shorter than I thought, but still a spectacular game. Maybe it was that short because of my experience with it though...

Only about 8 more hours until I pick IV up. ^_^

Plus the artbook! XD

Well actually, if he hasn't played the series yet he should play 4 first, and then 1-3. I bet it would probably make understanding "you-know-who"'s past and the Soul Eater much more easy. Its not like he needs the save game for suikoden 4.

But the few 'in-game' references in Suikoden IV will feel a lot more sweeter if he played Suikoden 1 first, IMO.

But playing it the other order might reveal new references that those who played in I=>IV order might have missed. :D

Like how if you played III first before II, it's quite a different experience from those who played it in order AFAIK.

Hummm actually I'm just about at the end of the game and *you know who* is the only real tie...noticeable one anyway. I'd suggest playing IV first.

He could play both at the same time....

Although methinks it would be best if he beat I first.

lets see, I played 2,1,3 and soon 4.
Im for you playing suikoden 1 first, I played through them all in order the second time and i think its makes the continuity a lot easier.

I'd say play them in the order they came out 1,2,3,4 and not chronological order.
If you play 4 and then 1 it will feel like a large technical step down and you won't enjoy 1 quite so much.
I played them in order (well except for 4..)

i dont think this is true. i really like the richness and the detail of the 2D games.

i think that you should play them chronologically. i think this way you would probably understand the story better.
