In addition to the Army Battles Guide and the topic about the Number of troops per character, I did a few tests with the Amry Battle Units.

As can be clearly seen in the guide, the category of the unit changes depending on its members. for example, when Sonya joins the Soldier Beauties, the unit changes from bow to magic. The unit does not check the composition of its members. Instead, each member has a category. The leader's category is always chosen. Sonya replaces Cleo as the leader in the last battle.

Under certain conditions this can be seen in other units. The Trickster unit always fights in the Charge category. Unless Meg is fighting alone. Since Meg is a sorceress, the unit changes to magic. This can only be observed very rarely, but it is possible. Juppo must have died in one of the battles before while Jabba must not have been recruited.

Milia and Futch are particularly interesting. Since only Joshua belongs to the special Dragon unit, they switch to the Charge category without him and have their own attack value. Because Joshua is immortal, this is impossible to trigger without cheats. Apple and Leon also become warriors without Mathiu by their side. This is not a secret. Since these are impossible scenarios, the developers have probably saved the effort of assigning these characters to the special units.

Nevertheless, I wonder how the units' attack strength is made up, since the values are obviously not simply added up from the individual characters. The guide here only lists legal combinations. A look at all possible combinations may help with the analysis. Each unit has only seven possible compositions. Maybe all seven combinations were simply assigned fixed values. Does the Japanese guide provide this data?

Small note: I've listed all the War Battle & Death Quotes in the script. Some of them are very interesting. They provide some information about the characters that have little text in the game anyway.

I dug up all the attack/leadership values for the normal units previously. It's all in the discussion thread. I never tried it with the Strategists/Dragon Knights since it never occurred to me that the game would do that. I also never got leadership values for characters who cannot lead in normal gameplay (Yam Koo, for example) Characters have a leadership value/unit type for when they lead, and a set number of points they add to the attack when they are in the 2nd or 3rd spot.

I'm guessing Leon, Apple, Milia, and Futch all have Charge leadership values and Apple/Futch have support values as well. I can get the rest of the data in a new playthrough if it is desired.

OK, here's the FULL list. It shows what unit type and power each character has and the increase in overall power they give the unit when in the second or third position.

Using Adventurers as a quick example:
If Lorelai is alone, it is a Bow 11 attack
If Quincy is alone, it is a Bow 9 attack
If Mina is alone, it is a Bow 4 attack
Lorelai + Quincy is a Bow 15 attack (11 + 4)
Lorelai + Mina is a Bow 13 attack (11 + 2)
Quincy + Mina is a Bow 11 attack (9 + 2)
All three is Bow 17 (11 + 4 + 2)

There are a few unit type changes in characters that cannot lead in normal gameplay. Eileen & Tengaar make their units Magic attacks, and Hix & Gon become Bow. Dragon Knights become Charge if Milia leads, but return to being Other if Futch leads. Strategists become a painfully weak Charge attack if anyone but Mathiu leads it.
