Bright shield,black sword rune

Post by Poet »

Are actually kinda weak, don't ya all think? Flowing rune is close to bright shield except berserk effect of battle oath and forgiver sign. Rage rune is stronger than black sword except for the last spell. The second spell of both the runes deal terrible dmg as well.

I actually like the Bright Shield Rune. It may not be as good a healing Rune as the Flowing Rune is, but it has a lot more versatility. And that is what makes it useful. Plus the fact that you get it so early in the game. Let's look at the spells for a second.

Lv 1 - Great Blessing - Any kind of group heal spell at low level is great. Kindness drops may pack a better healing punch, but at low level medicine is just as effective. Who needs a full heal spell when you only have 150 HP to begin with? And Protect Mist is useless against melee-based foes, which dominate the early stages of the game. A base healing of 70HP to a group is nothing to laugh at at low level. Sure, it is outclassed once higher level MP opens up, but most Level 1 spells do as well.
LV 2 - Shining Light - Again, not the most powerful damage spell available, but its still a good one. Fire Wall has stronger base damage, but only hits one row. Shining Light hits everything. It is also non-elemental, meaning no one is strong to it. At the very least, it's as much damage as a melee attack against all targets.
Lv 3 - Battle Oath - Best healing spell in the game. Just as powerful as Kindness Rain and if has a chance to Berserk? Hell yeah. Now if I could only get it to berserk Humphrey and not Luc all the time we'd be in business.
Lv 4 - Forgiver Sign - One of the best overall spells in the game. Highest base damage output of any spell in the game (Judgment is boosted by McDohl's Darkness affinity). And a free group heal if you need it. Even if your whole party is at half health its just as good as Shining Wind (against single targets that is). 2000 damage+ to a boss on the first turn is nothing to sneeze at.

As for Black Sword, Flash Judgment is weaker than Firestorm and both hit all enemies. So you are correct there. Twinkling Blade is pretty bad as well. 30% chance of insta-death is OK, but it does awful damage on the survivors and against bosses. Dancing Flames is much more powerful in terms of base damage. Piercing One and Explosion have the same base damage, but P.O. only hits one target. So Explosion is better. Hungry Friend is far and away better than Final Flame.

Riou is only an OK caster. He has decent MP, but only a C affinity with everything but Resurrection. The Bright Shield Rune allows him some spell versatility while leaving two slots open for combat Runes. Jowy, on the other hand, only has a great level 4 spell and could be doing much better things with his MP and good affinity for damage spells.

Well, both are not true rune. So it is fitting that these two are weaker than higher elemental runes
