Covers of Suikoden Music

Post by Runemaster »

These past few weeks I've been really into the rearrangement albums of Suikoden music and I'd like to know what other people like and dislike among them. Some of the versions are arguably better than the original, while some (more of them, actually) disappoint. We can also write suggestions of some possibly forgotten covers hidden in the internet, or fan covers from youtube or wherever. I'm not always in Youtube so I haven't come across good covers from uploaders. Anyway, I'm definitely no pro in music, but here are the better ones that I've heard so far:

The Boundless Dream (Genso Suikoden Piano Collection)
This cover is just sad and haunting. The best I've heard. I haven't played Suikogaiden but I've heard this from Rokkaku Hamlet in SII and this cover makes the original one sound plain sad--a different kind of sad. Excellent job.

Nostalgia (Suikoden II) - Genso Suikoden Piano Collection 2
Oh, Suikoden II. A beautiful arrangement that I can listen to at night and remember the best game I have played. This track lives up to its title. Not necessarily better than the Kyaro Town version but still gives me the crave for replaying the game.

Forgotten Days- Genso Suikoden Celtic Collection 2
The kind of music that gets stuck in your head, and every time you listen to it, you are forced to daydream. Possibly better than the original, in some sense.

Her Sigh- Genso Suikoden Vocal Collection 2
Ah, a vocal collection. I must admit, most of them are too cheesy for me, but this one is different. Yuko Imai's voice is perfect to capture the simplicity and the humble life of Radat. Some people like me may need to google the lyrics as it is difficult to understand from her accent but somehow, I like it better that way. It gives some kind of mystery. And then that finale: a beautifully tragic instrumental. Sometimes I play the track just to skip to this part.

The bad ones in my opinion:

Mysterious Forest- Genso Suikoden Arrange Collection Vol 1
This one kinda ruins the mood presented by the original. I know it's a cover but I can't help thinking that this is disappointing compared to the original. Plus, there's a weird mumbling part that made me skip the song entirely.

Her Sigh- Genso Suikoden Arrange Collection Vol. 1
The violin hurts the ears. The change in the timing of some parts is unwelcome. Weird that the instrumental can be worse than the vocal arrangement, but for me, that's the case for Her Sigh.

A Sad Wish- Genso Suikoden Arrange Collection Vol 2
Is it bad? Yes. Is it so bad it's good? Probably.

Such a long post. Let's discuss the opinions and suggestions of everybody!! And like I've said, amateur/ fan-made covers are very much welcome.
I will bring Lordlake's fate... to the entire Suikoden World! weeeeeeh!

I really like what I've heard of the Celtic stuff.

Ahhh yes I am totally obsessed with these tracks. Let me show you my favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Im8t-jivqE - Haneda Kentaro Into a World of Illusions (world map theme)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmcNn2W5tUM - Again, Into a World of Illusions, but this is the Celtic Collection
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc4AKkAJRdg - Celtic, Carried on Rippling Waves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRx0pdtNrlo - Celtic, ending theme (I think), Ending March
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sTX_S0t ... ults_video - Celtic, Tinto, Distant Mountains

Those are my top favorite, but there are seriously tons that I love. Haneda is the most hit or miss of any of the collections, but generally speaking I find all the vocal collections completely grating.
