Well, I played the first one, but never played the second. I heard in the second that you -the main character- actually kill your own wife during the game because she would be too much of a burden to protect. . . Add to this the propensity of people to use chainsaws on one another's genitals in mulitplayer, and I do wonder what Sigmund Freud would have to say about the game and the way it is designed and played. Oh, wait, he would be too busy commenting on the "teabagging" phenomenon in Halo.

Here is the source for the info about Gears 2. Also a very good article about gender issues in gaming: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/article ... ginophobia

That reminds me that there's a feminist blogger, that makes really good videos and is a gamer, that I check out regularly. I'm sure she would have a few things to say about that http://www.feministfrequency.com/ You should check some of her stuff out if you have time.

Well that isn't true, I can say that much without spoilers at least.

GEARS OF WAR 2 SPOILERS BELOW

The deutoragonist of the series kills his wife after she's lobotomised by the enemy, she's already braindead. Also I'm arguing semantics here but it's only "you" if you are player 2 in a co-op game.

I agree with the article in the sense of how poorly that scene was handled though, the impact was overwhelmingly, um...underwhelming? After having just spent a game and three quarters looking for her, when she is finally found the "heart wrenching" scene lasts about three minutes and ends up with her dead. Three minutes later, he's finished his "mad at The Locust" spiel and then it's business as usual.

Gears 3 addresses the "sexist" issue also, it includes a number of battle-hardened, strong, and strong-willed female characters that give as good as the guys, with no typical damsel in distress or irritating princess behaviour.

Oh yeah, further semantics I know, but nobody's genitals get mutilated specifically. Obviously when somebody gets completely eviscerated the balls go too, but it's not like any particular attention is drawn to this.

It appears she is trying to do a series of videos examining video games and feminist issues:

That is a link to the video proposal for the project. She acts in a professional manner, and I am interested in what she comes up with. Be warned though, many trolls have been commenting on that video, and some people have actually been flagging her videos and channel, over a feminist taking an eye to games. Truly, truly sad.
