weres roy's buddies supposed to join automatically after roy does? if not, where and how do i get them to join? thanks in advance..

Thje recruitment thread isn't specific enough. you have to go BACK to the mountain with Roy in your party to recruit them.

If you chose you were just trying to clear your good name, then let them free in the next choice they join you on the spot with Roy, from many reports I've heard and thus you don't have to go back up the mountain for them.
