"Stand By" saves you time..
i compared the turn order btwn Stand By and using an item.. Stand By lets the character get their turn faster... Attacking and using runes might also delay the next turn by a little

I did some testing with this a while back. Various other things worth noting:
-Moving before you act adds some delay to your turn. It doesn't matter if you move 1 space or 10, the delay for any movement should be equal.
-If you act first and then move (using Extra Move), the delay is the same as if you stood still.
-Rune attacks cause more delay than regular attacks. Different runes and different ranks of abilities seem to cause equal delay.
-Using items causes less delay than runes, which can make beads more useful than elemental sword runes sometimes.
-Switching characters, mounting, or dismounting will also add to delay.
