How often can you save in this game?

I ask because I don't want to start my serious playthrough of this unless the answer is "often" (I plan on using this game in short bursts in between studies), otherwise it'll have to wait until break.

There are two save-options in the game:
A hard save is your regular save on your memory card, you can do that everytime outside of a battle.

Then, when you are in battle, you can also soft save. I guess this could work for you. When soft saving, the game quits, and when you load the soft save, the soft savestate disappears. So it's more of a "Ok, I need stop playing, I'll do it again" tomorrow thing.
