Rune of Punishment error

Post by Raww Le Klueze »

In the True Runes section it reads:
The succeeding bearer [Graham Cray] was the father of the previous bearer
This isn't right, Graham Cray bore the rune first then when he cut off his hand it transferred to his son, it's easily established by the memories of the boy.

i don't remember the exact storyline... can you help?
One such incident occured in a border village between Kooluk and the Scarlet Moon Empire: some Scarlet Moon nobles dressed up as Kooluk raiders and attacked the town to drum up support for a war; the then bearer of the Rune (who was a small child) unleashed its power and the nobles, as well as the village, were decimated. The succeeding bearer [Graham Cray] was the father of the previous bearer, and in order to escape the Rune's curse he severed his left arm from his body; the act saved him from the Rune, but he then developed a fixation on the power he had discarded.

so is it that Graham unleashed it on the village, or was it still his son who did it and died as a result? something like....... Graham Cray found himself with the rune, cut off his hand, and his son ended up with the rune, THEN the town got invaded and the boy used its powers?

did Graham receive the rune immediately after the Queen of Obel or did it travel around until it got to Graham?

There's no exact timeline available but it goes from the Queen -> ??? -> Graham Cray - Graham Cray's Son -> ??? -> Rakgi's Father -> Steele -> Brandeu -> Glen -> Lazlo.

??? can indicate any number of unknown people.

After Graham Cray gets it he has it for a while until he for unknown reasons uses it and it starts to take his life, at this point he cuts off his hand and the rune transfers to his son. The son has it until the "human hunting" incident at the border village.

Graham Cray seeks the rune to experience the memories of his son, if Suikosources version is true it's completely illogical for him to first cut off his hand and then run around trying to get it back as he would already have had access to them.

One of the memories state, paraphrased; Man "No... why did it have to be you?" this is meant to be after he cut off the hand. By this time there would be no reason for Cray to know how the rune works if he hadn't already owned it.

Cray instructs his son to never use the Rune, but when the human hunting begins he disobeys and kills the nobles leading to his demise. In one of the memories he asks Crays forgiveness for disobeying him.

After the son dies Cray is questioned by Scarlet Moon officials but because he refuses to speak he is blamed for killing the nobles.

Furthermore the act of cutting off the hand is clearly one of desperation as he takes no preparations for it. If he wanted to keep the rune he would have gone to a secluded place, like done in the Ruins of Obel, so the rune couldn't escape to someone else.

thanks so much!
one thing about Cray's motives though... i don't recall him saying he wanted to experience his son's memories (really? this started the entire war?), wasn't he bent on getting revenge on Scarlet Moon Empire or something in a destructive nature?

Depending on what you say to him at the end when he asks if you saw a young boy within the runes memories he can reply "Wonderful! I too would like to hold the Rune of Punishment once more and play with those sweet memories", paraphrased, if you tell him the boy wanted some bread.

He convinces Kooluk to search for the rune under the guise of offering it to Harmonia in exchange for military backing, but going by the game alone it's not clear if he actually planned to do that.

Of course the game leaves a lot of thing ambigously vague and never outright tells you anything, nor does it touch upon how the hell he plans to obtain it again when he doesn't have a left hand to begin with.
