108 Stars page errors

Post by WaterMoon »

Not really errors per-se, as mistranslation. As a linguist (primarily chinese, working on japanese), I've studied The Water Margin, and figured since there's a section on who had that star in the books, I'd give the proper chinese to english translations of the stars and their names, for those who are interested. (This also helps overcome some of the problems in the translation from chinese to japanese to english where you have two Tenyu or two Tenki stars, though not all. Not unless I threw in chinese tones too, heh.) Due to inability to distinguish between a normal "u" (that's supposed to be the letter, not the word, but it autocorrects, which is cool, but counterproductive in this rare case, lol) and one with an umlaut above it, I'll use a "v", which is the norm for computer typing of pinyin.

As I've been typing this up, I came to realize what you have on the site isn't wrong, it's likely Wade Giles for the names and such. So this is just a more commonly used way of seeing the names and their proper translations, and stars. Just for anyone interested, you know.

That is an awesome list, thank you. Now those names finally make more sense, when transliterated into the same style as many other Chinese translations. But then, I've always find Wade-Giles to appear rather strange, compared to Pinyin.

Thanks for the work. It's good to have a pinyin version. However, to say that your translation is the "correct" one would be a mistake, because there are more than few things that can be disputed (mainly because translations vary for the meaning of the stars). For example, you translated 病尉遅 as "The sickly general," but the character 病 used to also mean "equivalent to" back when Shui Hu Zhuan was edited. 尉遅 refers to the Tang dynatsy general Wei Chi Gong.

That's a very good point as well Sars. I'm thinking I might add the actual chinese characters to the list here when I get the chance. We're busy with lots of testing the next two months here, validating our skills as linguists and all that. Yay military!!! But yeah, I'd hafta look them up, and it would take me a lot of time to type them in (I think it was like 3-4 hours for me to properly do this whole list), though I still suggest reading the book in its various forms (yes, there's about 6 different versions in total). For those that are confused, the major differences are how many chapters are in the book and what language style is used. There's 72 chapter versions, 100 chapter versions, versions in a more poetic language, versions in a more down to earthy feel, like a bandit themselves might write, and so on.
