It certainly does have Bond in it - it even has his woman from Casino Royal in it. Daniel Craig was under utilised in this film.

Judging from the business The Golden Compass has taken in I doubt that we'll see a sequel.

Do you think that the religious protestors had anything to do with that?

It really bugs me that they do things like that. To me, that's just as if I were outside their church, protesting against what they like to do. If they don't like the movie, why can't they just NOT see it, and leave everyone else in peace?

Oh I agreee. Thoese idiots are trying to shove religion down our throats. If you wanna have faith in a religion or whatever fine with me but don't cause an awesome movie to be without a sequal just because we who do not feel the same way like to watch it! I want to watch the bloody movie sequal and it would make money and stuff. Not only that but Daniel Crag is awesome! Why would you protest about a movie with him in it I mean, COME ON!!!
I think they need to go out and find something better to do with thier life, liek maybe get a job and work or play some videogames. :x

Oh yeah on a random note I went to see it and I LOVED it so there.

I think the other reason it didn't do so well is because it's just not as popular over here in the states as, say, Harry Potter or LoTR. It's just not.

oh well.

The book series you mean? If so it's not as popular in Canada either.

The Catholic League has called for a boycott of the film, and nothing else. Nothing wrong there.

In my opinion I do think that the religious protests would have dampened the film's chance of success to a certain degree, but this wouldn't be an overwhelming factor as other people on this forum have quite rightly pointed out other factors in it's lack of success (i.e. HDM trilogy not being as popular in North America; lukewarm reviews; fantasy fatigue etc).

BUT - perhaps I'm being a bit naive here but I'd say that America is quite a religious country and when a group such as the Catholic League condemns a film for having slightly anti-religious undertones (which in all fairness it does if you look for it) it probably puts off what could be a considerably larger audience.

This too sort of bugs me because the one message that the film leaves with the audience is to not just blindly accept whatever we're told from those in authority and to be inquisitive, which is kind of ironic when people go through with these boycotts.

If anyone feels like I'm talking crap I understand - I get it a lot.

Well, I'm in doubt that the Catholic League has much to do with the film's lack of success, since they don't have many members, and a lot of their fellow Catholics consider them to be a bigoted organization. I point to the success of The DaVinci Code and Brokeback Mountain, which the CL also condemned, to support this.

However, the CL's feelings on this film have little to do with the film itself.

the film wasn't a big hit because the book wasn't as huge as Harry Potter, Lion/Witch/Wardrobe, Lord of the Rings, etc.. Not even close. My elementary school had everybody read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and I have never even heard of The Golden Compass until the movie information came out while Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and their themes/ideas are frequently used/mentioned every day.

just thought id add the book was originally called northern lights but they changed it in America to the golden compass, haven t a clue why! and seeing as the film is English made........ kinda like harry potter and the philosopher's stone/ sorcerer's stone!
if anything the Christian hatred of it has made it more successful, well it was what made me pick it up and eventually watch it!

I never read it in school either, but I am looking for the book, because I like reading a book of a movie I've seen since the books are almost always better.

Saw the movie on a whim today. We wanted to burn some time, and this was the only one that fit the time available.

All I can say is that it really felt incomplete. Even without reading the book, we couldn't decide whether the original book was written in such haphazard manner or it was the movie adaptation that wasn't faithful leaving out a lot of details. If we don't see a sequel, I'm not surprised. The world has yet to recover from Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter...

Otherwise, it was a good amount of nearly 2-hour promo of the book. The setting is nicely done, and as long as the book doesn't bore me like LotR did, then I might just give them a try.

(The concept of daemon sure is disturbing. It's hard enough to keep your one self out of mortal dangers; now there is a physically separate representative of the soul as well? The ideas that people can come up with... sigh. I hated that mute monkey.)
