Re: Donnie Darko
Banged my head against the wall for a bit after I saw this one.
Very well made film. Did anyone else pickup on the anti-theistic undertones?

Yea, totaly. I works in a strange parody. The film is largely about the search for God. On inspection, it seem as if the film is coming from an aethist or anti-theist stance but, upon closer inspection, it actualy tries to confirm the existence of some sort of God (first highlights by his therapist saying he is not an aethiest, but an agnostics, in the directors cut)

Re: Donnie Darko
Not really...
It's more about the effects that such deities have on our lives. For Donnie, it was Frank; for many of the town's residents, it was Jim Cunningham. One of my favorite shots in the film is of Kitty wearing the "GOD is awesome!!" T-shirt.

Hmmm.....
The film works on many different levels and I think its designed for the viewers to take what they can from it. For you it was more about the effects that deities have on people. For me, it was more about the search for God. For others, its simply about schizophrenia.

Re: Donnie Darko
that's the good thing I suppose,it is subjective and can really be interpreted in many different ways. I do agree about the anti-theistic undertones.
Also,I loved the God is Awesome shirt, laughed so hard over it.
Did anyone catch the sequel?

Re: Donnie Darko
Ugh ...I refuse to watch the sequel. It sounds and looks horrible. Unless anyone here can strongly suggest that I watch it?

Re: Donnie Darko
No,there is no strong suggestion, even the original director didn't want to touch it.
I started to watch it out of curiosity and...stopped. It's supposed to be about the younger sister and high schoolers dying off and all that jazz...hallucinations....to me it felt more like a glorified fanfiction.

Re: Donnie Darko
Yeah, sounds as horrible as I thought. These sequels usualy suck. Especially when its a totaly different production cast. When I found out Richard Kelly didnt want to touch it I kinda knew it would be that kind of film. I was still hoping Michael Andrews would do the soundtrack again though so was a little interested. But he didnt. So now I frown in disgust at its existence

Re: Donnie Darko
Some sequels turn out really well but Donnie Darko ended in such a way that it didn't need to be continued at all for any reason...it's not like the audience left it with too many "what happens now?" sorts of questions, especially when it came down to the younger sister that was barely seen anyway...that is one issue I have with some movie sequels, they are just unnecessary and beat a good story to death.

Re: Donnie Darko
Surprise to see this thread still around. Still a good classic, not so much the sequel. What a waste of money, in my honest opinion.

Re: Donnie Darko
It definitely was a waste,a lot of film sequels are, they usually end up straying too far from the original plot line or don't touch it at all. It's irritating.
