Yeah, it is pretty safe here. There are Bears and Cougars though, and not the hot kind of Cougar that is divorced and wears too much perfume lol.
I take it you don't mean the hot kind of bears that I go for either. :(

Sweden is an odd case, but any tries of comparing data should be done at the end of Corona. It is hard to compare numbers when the basis is not clear. COmparing over-mortality by the end of the year will give a much clearer picture on which country performed well and which didn't.

Sweden is also an odd case because the people's relationship to their government is apparently very ... peculiar. I mean in the US, the general idea is "as little state as possibly involved in my daily affairs", but if the health department in Sweden declares something, this is apparently enough for the Swedes to follow, so they don't need to spell out a law for everything. But yeah, they were probably too relaxed in their measures (even though news coverage of the Swedish government doing nothing is often missing the point and creating a news story where there is none).

Comparing different regions right now is a bad idea, yeah. I keep trying to knock this down with my family and friends, but it's not easy. There's all sorts of bunk floating around like cherry-picking 5 European countries with a total population similar to the US, combining them, and saying we must be fine because some of our numbers are lower. Ignoring that the outbreak started a couple of weeks earlier in those countries, they have 3-10 times our population density, etc., etc. Then they do the reverse and cherry-pick 6 states with the lowest population density, that were last to have detected outbreaks, and yell about how we're all sheep for following shutdowns and lockdowns when states with about 2.5 people per square kilometer are kind of limping along without such measures.

There are analyses that try to normalize the stats based on when outbreaks started, and other confounding factors, but it doesn't help that the numbers are still in flux, and can do things like spike upward because officials changed what counts as a COVID-19 related death in their tallies, or because a nursing home was hiding an outbreak.

The crazy thing about the Swedish approach is that it gets held up as both a failure and an example of how the US should have done things, depending on who you ask. I don't know why people think it would have worked here, though. Only about half will follow anything presented as a recommendation or guideline, and a big chunk of our population wants to try to start a "boogaloo" if the government even slightly inconveniences them.

To be more precise, I should have said that I side with these 22 Swedish Scientists that protested the government policy on Covid-19. https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidnikel ... 52305a7b6c

Which is quite rare there in Sweden, you are right.

Regardless, I don't really want to make this a political thread. But, that being said, any sensible person can see that North Korea is actually just claiming 0 cases and 0 deaths completely out of their behind. And, misinformation and mismanagement from governments is a serious threat to, well, everyone in the entire world, right?

For those that don't know, a "Boogaloo" is a new-ish American Right-Wing term for "violent, armed rebellion" against the government. And it is actually getting pretty serious, I am afraid. But yeah, I agree with Pyriel it's getting nuts, especially here in America, where guns are so common, and used to intimidate, under the auspices of the Second Amendment. There are other conspiracies floating out there too, that a vaccine will contain a microchip from Bill Gates used to control you. . . Somehow. I would laugh, but frankly these people seem to really believe that in this time of crisis, and it threatens everyone's health and safety.

Anyway, I really, really, am glad to see everyone doing so well. And it is great to talk to you all again, so, best wishes for you and your families.

Well, the UK is gradually starting to reopen, but now we're having forest fires because some dickheads decided to have barbecues out in the countryside during what has so far been one of our driest summers ever. This country is full of cunts.

Beware, some people are burned at the stake for comments like those. It is the 21 century fellas, which means you can make fun only of caucasic men.

Seriously now, I hope everybody is ok.
@sticky-runes: every country has its share of cunt heads. In Spain, some cities are going back to (kind of) normal and you can already watch on the news people crowding places or beaches. Feels like two months at home were not enough.
@Rooks: thanks for the boogaloo info, it would be hilarious if it was not disturbing. As for good old Kim and Northko...what can we say? I wonder why people all over the world are not running, swimming or flying to live in such a wonderful country. Probably because of the confinement and travel restrictions. Definitely.

As for me, I am playing baldurs gate (enhanced edition) after many many years and enjoying it. As I probably wrote a few weeks ago, I had not had so much time for video games since I was a teen. It is been nice, but it is enough. I am looking forward to work again and it seems that it could happen in a week or two.
Foregone conclusion. It does not matter the country: boogaloos, cunt heads, ñordos (spanish slang, turd is a close translation) are an influential majority in every country... except North Korea, of course.

So now we're in second lockdown. Normally I'm not one to get political, but even I think this is ridiculous. Things felt like they were getting back to normal during July and August, then come September - when everyone went back to school - those numbers shot right up. And all non-essential businesses have closed and the schools and colleges are staying open. And if a student tests positive, the school closes for a week. Oh, but hopefully, all the shops will reopen at the beginning of December - so everyone can go rushing out to do their Christmas shopping and the virus can can flare right up again.

Supposedly, a vaccine may be ready in the new year, and I'm trying to stay optimistic about that. But even if we do get a vaccine, who's to say it will be safe for everyone to take? Could it be risky for people with certain allergies or on certain medication?

I guess another positive thing is we've had lots of practice living in quarantine by now, and know what measures to take. Opticians and dentists are staying open this time around, and some cafes and restaurants are staying open for takeaways. And a local weekly market in my area is allowed to operate for stalls that are selling essentials (i.e. butchers, green grocers) So this lockdown is not as grim as the first lockdown we had back in March, but i miss living. I miss going to gigs and festivals. I miss meeting up with friends and going on dates. I miss walking down the high street and not seeing everyone in masks and panic buying toilet rolls. And I miss not needing a zoom account to attend a meeting or interview. Can anyone give me a bit of good news?

Unfortunately it looks like Christmas is out for us. We'll do a video call with our parents' but that's about all we can do now. I thought the cases in April were bad but they're way way worse in Canada the last couple of months. Our wave two is much worse than our wave one was. At least the vaccine is being distributed slowly. Just have to take it one day at a time. Things won't be normal for this Christmas but hopefully by next Christmas if enough people take the vaccine.
There's still plenty to be grateful about. I'm grateful that I can work from home and my parents are healthy enough not to be in a nursing home as those were hit very hard. It's a big upheaval for sure but I feel really bad for people who are more directly effected.

I'm glad you are hanging in there, Opp. It has just been a nightmare here in the US. According to Johns Hopkins University, we are just vaulting towards 30 million cases and 600,000 deaths. It is nuts.

Let's hope the vaccine rollout is good, so, we can all get our Fauci-ouchies and put this virus in it's place in the history books. It's been a terrible year for all of us. In America, we cancelled Christmas, but, well, it was for everyone's benefit. This has now been a year of lockdowns for me, and it is awful. I've played through every Suikoden game twice!

I actually think I may have the record for the Chris Lv99 Trick! I got her to Lv 99 in 18 hours about 30 minutes lol.

I'm trying to plan my first trip and this is how I would want to take it in my head; having a general idea of where I want to visit and planning hostels and such a few days ahead.
My question is do you buy a Eurail pass or something similar for this kind of travel? And have you ever encountered a situation where hostels were all booked already in advance and you couldn't find one?
Generally I didn't buy a Eurail pass either time I went to mainland Europe because it didn't make sense with my routes since I was in Eastern Europe/countries that were not covered by the passes for a big chunk of each trip. I also had a car for part of the time on one of the trips or watch anime like dragon ball filler list. I never had the problem of not being able to get a hostel, but I did have to turn Bruges into a day trip but that was when I had a car so I was able to easily stay in a small town not too far away. It wasn't that everything was sold out, just way too expensive that night for some reason.

I wouldn't recommend that trip at the moment, because once you cross an European border and were in a high risk area before, you may be forced into quarantine for 1 or 2 weeks. Every country handles it differently, though.

I'm like 75% sure that's just an advertising account. No idea what the business model is, though.

Lol, I was like 40% sure it's a spam account, but without any links to porn websites, it was hard to recognize.
