Looking for names for Suikoden.
That are in the Suikoden games or just names that sound like they should be in a Suikoden game.

Re: Names
Suikoden takes names from heaps of different cultures, and some seem to be just made up randomly. (Shoon? I mean come on...) So pretty much anything goes really.
Maybe try a website that specialises in names rather than one that focuses on Suikoden? eg. http://www.20000-names.com/

The only thing Suikoden lacks...is dinosaurs.

Wow, I'm pretty sure that site is why Adblock was invented.
Nikisaur is right, there's no such thing as a 'Suikoden-sounding name'. There's way too many characters for that to happen. If they chose a culture to base most of the names off of, the entire game would be hitting you over the head with that culture because they would have to use all of the names for that culture, common and obscure. RPGs with only a handful of characters can get away with this, Suikoden can't.

Re: Names
I bet Konami had fun coming up with:
Nefentitiri Radames Ampenhetep Iruiktanas Antikoseus Puto Remaios Kureakias Dimetirios Farasmuseian Ishak Saraj Amenenuhet Atomes Hatshepsut Toto Ank Amen Hortez VII
But alas, like Kornholia has stated the names seem to come from all sorts of cultures and some were probably entirely made up or modified.

Then I will go on a bit :Palmguy wrote:Yeah, the names are from different culture.
Luc (french), Hanz (German), Shu (Asian-ish) you've got 3 different culture right there. I could keep going on, I just dont feel like checking the names lol.
Pesmerga (kurdish), Riou (sounds like Ryu, which means "dragon" in japanese.. but maybe it's just a coincidence), Hugo (german), Boris (russian), Apple & Stallion (english, obviously), Tsai, Rikimaru, Tomo are japanese, too (correct me if I'm wrong ), Huan is.. chinese?
Eh.. okay, I guess that's enough for me..
P.S.: It's Hans

Re: Names
On interesting thing is that Harmonians tend to have names from European countries like France or Germany. This might be more of a translation issue than a creative one though, but characters like Luc, obviously have a french influence. Also, many weapons have German names, like Grosser Fluss and Cathri's weapon, Chris, and many others as well.
Oddly, both the physicians and bandits have Chinese names. Huan and Yu are both common Mandarin names. Lo Wen from SII, plus the bandits from SIV, Lo Hak, Lo Seng, and Lo Fong. Also, Feylen and Feylon from SV probably should have been translated as Fei Lon and Fei Len in order to fit in with the Chinese Bandit theme.
Unfortunately, Suikodens seem to largely lack influence from Spanish and Italian. While there might be some examples of Spanish -like Juan- and some of Italian -some names like Lucia could go either way french or italian- I really don't see as much of that in Suikoden as French and German.
As far as Asian languages, Chinese and Japanese play large roles of course, but the fact that very few Characters in Suikoden have Surnames reminds me of Malaysia and other countries in Asia minor and Micronesia, where many people lack Surnames and are usually referred to with just one name. This is for several reasons. One, on the Ryukyu islands, constant occupation by either Japanese or Chinese forces caused many of the people there to lose family heritage, and thus their surnames. The same can be said for the Philipines and the Marianas, although this was due to western colonization. But in say, Singapore and Malaysia, there seems to just be a cultural cause for a lack of surnames, not influenced by foreign powers. So, who knows?
