When Queen Olhazeta passed away, the throne was vacant and her two daughters fought over the throne. Nothing was ever mentioned to what happened to Olhazeta's husband who was Commander of the Queen's Knights before Ferid. Kauss never took the position because he was killed before Falzhram was crowned. Olhazeta's husband either dropped dead too or was one of the many Nether Gate victims.
When Falzhram ascended the throne, Ferid probably did have to step up and serve his mother in law as Commander of the Queen's Knights. Probably hated every day of it until she got sick and died of illness. Then Armes invades and he and Arshtat unite the country for the moment and drive them back.
Seems the throne and the commandership were vacant a few times during both of Falena's civil wars.
