Question about the Rune of the Beginning

Post by Greywolf »

For the purposes of filling out the ranks of the 27 True Runes, do the Bright Shield and Black Sword Runes count as one, or two? That is, do they each count as a True Rune, or do both of them have True Rune powers but they only count as one? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just wanted to make sure. Thank you very much.

Rune of Beginning is the only true rune among them, therefore it only counts as one in the ranks of 27 True Runes.

The two aspects, Bright Shield and Black Sword, are neither true runes on their own nor do they have enough powers individually to count as such. However, these are unique runes with unique powers, in some ways similar to the Dawn and Dusk runes.

But... when you click on the Rune in the menus during the gameplay of Suik 2, it says "one of the 27 True Runes." It says this whether you click on the Bright Shield when looking at Riou, or the Black Sword when looking at Jowy, (the later before Jowy leaves the party.) The ultimate powers of the Bright Shield and the Black Sword -- Forgiver Sign and Hungry Friend -- are on par with Judgment, the ultimate ability of the Soul Eater, which is certainly one of the 27 True Runes. Forgiver sign, for example, does 2000 damage, (I believe,) which seems about right for a True Rune, but too strong for anything but. Finally, the Shield Rune in Suik 3 seems like a weaker version of the Bright Shield, which led me to believe that such runes were born of the Bright Shield as were, say, Fire Runes of the True Fire Rune. So, are you sure about this? I don't mean to be a bother. Thanks.

Suikoden II is a haven for mistranslations.

Also, remember that there is that one called a Rage rune between normal Fire rune and the True Fire Rune?

When it comes down to it, in-game stats matter very little in recognising any specific rune is among the 27 True Runes. The Rune of Punishment went from terrible excuse of a True Rune in IV to a terrible monster in Rhapsodia.

"Ultimate ability" is a misnomer really, when we see the spells on many recurring runes (even common ones) are being revised between games.

Alrighty, thank you.
