Horrible Basic Suikoden III Question

Seeing as I live in Europe, my knowledge of Suikoden III is a bit smaller compared to the others so... my horribly basic question is as follows.

The Great Hollow. What is it, exactly?

Also its a hollowed out cavern hence the name Great Hollow.

It is not some villages with straw huts. It is basically a big cave dugged into a mountain, thus the name Great Hollow. Inside the big cave, there are mini caves where individual lizards stay. There is also a tunnel network leading into several exits.
