Guys, nobody said Suikoden is chauvinist. Chauvinists might find Eileen’s role (faithful housewife) appealing, her attitude (having the last word) maybe less as you say, sticky. But whatever chauvinists think about her doesn’t matter, my point is, her role is boring compared to many many other females in Suikoden. Eileen is one of the loveliest Tenkou Stars of the series, but also one of the most boring.

Even talking about her is boring, better give me some more anti-Chaco rants...

(Bruce, just on a side note, you said somewhere you’re currently reading the novel. When I read the chapter about Lin Chong and his wife, I immediately thought of Lepant and Eileen. Didn’t you do as well?)

Eileen is not a boring character. she's not an armored soldier or a tomboy in a short skirt, she's a classical lady. All the female SODs stand their ground differently, and we love them all for it. Meg prattles on about being a trainee inventor and does what she wants without seeking permission, Camille gets in your face and says what she thinks, Cleo makes sarcastic comments and zeros in on a guy's weakness to put him in his place and Ronnie threatens to beat the crap out of men for being rude. Eileen gets her point across in an elegant and dignified manner. I'm sure all the other women would be impressed by her ability to calm Lepant's fiery temperament in a loving manner while maintaining her composure, without whining and nagging or using threats. That's how diverse the women in Suikoden are.

But we don't like Chaco because he's scum who doesn't deserve to have his name etched on that tablet.

You’ve just caused some more thoughts on female roles, but I’d better open another thread for that.

As for Chaco, it seems to me that after he stole all the money, people already hate him and perceive all his actions correspondingly.
Some examples:

- If it was Kyle who called the hero small fry (or small frey… ok, that was a bad one), nobody would care or they would even find it funny. By the way, here’s the complete sentence:”At first I worried that a small fry like you couldn't protect us. But you've become a great leader, Riou. We know that fighting alongside you means protecting our city.” Sounds nice actually, unless you’re harping on the small fry thing.

- Somebody said even in Two River nobody likes Chaco. There is a human boy in the human district saying ”I got a letter from my friend Chaco! He's become a great hero in the Dunan Army!!!” A winger says ”Hey, what happened? Ha ha, Chaco got you, didn't he? I'm right, aren't I?” This doesn’t really sound like they don’t like him. Susu apologizes for him because she’s courteous and feels responsible as his grandma, but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t love him. Were there others who mentioned Chaco? I only remember there were some citizens generally complaining about wingers.
On a side note: If you enter the winger district from the south and enter the house to the left, a mother will ask you if you’ve seen her boy. If you go to the basement and examine the bookshelf it says “pornographic books”. I guess it’s the room of a winger boy in puberty, but I only know one…

- I don’t like all these questions where Riou must choose but actually has no choice in the end. Chaco as a story character (of a particular area) should just join automatically, like Freed, Nina etc. In other words, he should be either forced into the army like all other story characters, or treated as an optional character. I can remember only 1 quest where Chaco is forced into the party, I think in Muse, but I forgot if you have the option to put him in the convoy. Other story characters are forced into the party more often.

Whatever… Chaco, I tried my best, but people hate you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. You’re worth less than a failure urn to them, and they would even pay maximum potch to get rid of you. Conclusion closed.
