Starting this up again. Two questions on recruitment

Post by bookwormbabe29 »

Hey all!

As topic says, two questions to pick your brain with today.

1. I read on a forum post people play Geddoe 1 first to get Peggi and his hammer, but I can't remember when the others can actually go there to make use of this. I probably will play Geddoe 1 first anyway to try this so it's not crucial, just curious of anyone remembers of the top of their head.

2. Second, I am wondering who the characters should recruit. I could have sworn there was a faq/sticky here that detailed suggestions, but either it's gone, I imagined it, or I've gone blind lol. If I remember right, the idea was to recruit people who can fight in war battles with Thomas for his fights, and other castle service people ASAP to help everyone. Can anyone make any suggestions for funny scenes, or helpful for a certain part (boss fights or something). Again, not crucial or anything, just curious if anyone had any suggestions to make the best use of my 108 stars.

Thanks for your time! :)

Chris can visit Budehuc in Chapter 2 and Hugo in 3. People tend to play all of Geddoe's chapters first so they can get access to the copper hammer easily and then use that to boost Chris, Thomas and Hugo if they're going that route.

As for the other question the only thing that is really worth any longer thought is getting Mel with Chris, otherwise it's just trying to get most fighters with Thomas and the shopkeepers as fast as you can with whatever characters.

there's several characters who's start level is dependent on the person recruiting them, which may be what you are thinking of. These characters matter mostly if you are planning to use the Chris leveling trick. Most of them start at their recruiter's level give or take a level or two though so if you aren't using a super high level Chris, then it won't make a difference. Single exception to this would be Belle, who will start 15 levels higher, but only if Hugo recruits her, which is a great way to get a level 75 character into your army without having to using the level trick, or grinding with the fortune rune.

outside of that, the general principle is to grab characters as soon as possible, preferably by someone who can use them.

Hm, well, I'm still curious as to recruiting. I seem to recall Thomas needs as many war party members as he can get, but I can't find a list of who actually serves in war battles. Any suggestions where to find such information?

When I created my list for who to recruit with whom I figured out which characters are required to defend Budehuc in chapter 3. The Suikoden wiki that concentrates more on the universe information then the technical game stuff like here has it listed on the page for each recruitable character.

I still have the list so here they are:
Mel, Watari, Kenji, Koroku, Twaikin, Belle, Gadget Z, Ayame, Augustine, Nei, Shabon, Toppo, Sanae Y

To be honest though, the battle isn't hard enough to warrant getting all of them. Piccolo is such a beast if he casts lightning in that battle he destroys most things.

Edit: There are only two other combat characters that can be recruited by Thomas. (Melville and Alanis) They might be able to help in that combat as well, the wiki didn't say they could though.

Edit Edit: Also there are only 8 slots going that aren't filled by Thomas, Cecile, Juan and Piccolo, so getting all 13 of those characters isn't necessary.

The only thing I could find, and it's not actually about War units, is a Character/Boss FAQ on gamefaqs.com that has a detailed description of the individuals strengths, weaknesses and skill levels. Thomas honestly doesn't need that many war characters. if you spend the time to grind a little with Thomas, Cecile, Juan, and Piccolo, all of them perform much better in the war battles than anyone you're going to recruit.

I know the original poster is probably well past this point now but I've been researching for a guide I'm working on so I can tell you how recruiting characters and the Thomas Chapter 2 battles work.

So over the course of the two battles there are a total of 5 units you can control 2 of which are used in both battles. The Hugo Unit and the Lilly Unit are the same no matter what you do so no explaining needed there.

From the remaining 3 units only Thomas, Cecile, Juan, Piccolo, Sebastian and Martha are always in these Units. The other characters are in those exact locations if you have recruited them, otherwise those slots are empty. The only character I strongly suggest you get with Thomas is Mel, everyone else is optional.

Thomas Unit looks like this
MiddleFront - Twaikin
Front - Mel (Has Surprise)
Front - Piccolo
Back - Thomas (Leader)
Support - Martha

The Thomas Unit has the abilities Wind Rune I (Probably on Thomas), Quicken I (Probably on Thomas) and QuickAid (Probably on Martha). Having Mel also adds Surprise to the unit.

Cecile Unit looks like this
MF - Nei
F - Toppo
F - Shabon
B - Cecile (Leader)
S - Sebastian (Has Control IV)

Nei, Toppo and Shabon have the skills Quicken II and QuickAid. I don't know who has what although I have an inkling that Nei has them both.

Juan Unit looks like this
MF - Augustine (Has Tactics I)
F - Koroku
F - Watari
B - Juan (Leader, Has Valor III)
S - Mio (Has, Heal II and QuickAid)

Most interesting! I did do Thomas 1, and let him recruit a lot of people as I thought it fitting him being the Tenkai and all. I saved Mio for Chris in Thomas 1, but I can still grab her before the war battles if I remember right. Both this and the big list were are quite helpful, so you have my thanks :)
