Ayame Question

Just a quick question I apologize if this is a stupid one too

I'm on Thomas Chapter 1
I have Watari in my party and I've been searching the North Cavern for some time and I can't get the Ayame duel to trigger.

Bring Watari to the end of the North Cavern. Fight her in a duel and win.

According to the guide here it can be done in Thomas chapter 1.

Am I missing something?

take watari out of your part, then talk to him in the basement, view a scene, the put him back in your party and go to the north cavern
