who's the 'correct' flame champion???

based on the manga, Hugo is the FC. he resembles your Tenkai from the previous games, and Geddoe and Chris have storyline ties to the True Lightning and True Water runes respectively.

Aside from that, Hugo fits most for the True Fire Rune concerning his skills.

While I haven't tested this theory with Chris yet, Hugo's fire compatibly if slightly better than Geddoe's.

But in the manga, yes, Hugo was the flame champion.

You're right, I went back and checked (haven't played it in forever) and I meant Chris.

I meant that I didn't know Geddoe's stats with the Fire rune, but Chris' isn't as good as Hugo's.

Most of the time I chose Hugo, because of, well... the reasons pointed out here.

For reasons stated earlier here, Hugo fits best as a FC.

Furthermore, looking at the magic skills, the three true runes are well distributed with this choice too:

FC Hugo: Fire B, Lightning A, Water B+
FC Geddoe: Fire B+, Lightning B, Water B+
FC Chris: Fire C, Lightning A, Water C

Of course, you may alter the max stats with equipment, and pump even Chris to 100+ MAG for the fourth spell. But looking at these basic skills, I would state Hugo is the best choice in terms of the runes.

Geddoe has A in Lightning. Hugo and Chris does not. I remember very well. Chris has B+ in Water if i am not wrong.

Actually, I listed the rune distribution if you chose Flame Champion X, like

if your FC is Hugo, then you will end up with
Fire B (Hugo),
Lightning A (Geddoe),
Water B+ (Chris)

Affinity doesn't change which is why some people consider Hugo the "Best" flame champion because when he takes the True Fire rune everyone elses ideal affinities coincide with the rune true rune they get.

I know the manga prefers Hugo, while Geddoe has the best Fire Magic skill potential, but I prefer Chris on the whole. Geddoe's best with Lightning Magic, whereas I'd rather have the more reliable magic user wields True Water Rune.

In Suikoden III, Fire Magic is far riskier than Water. Not to mention also the fact that her abysmal magic stats mean the True Water Rune would be wasted on her, so you might as well give it to someone who could actually use it.
